This collection of (true!) stories is the only one I know of that gives an accurate account of the Western Paradise. Like most of you I assumed it was a figment of some hungry ascetic’s imagination. Then one day a door opened - and there it was.
Now, after decades (and longer) of travels, scrapes, and near escapes, it is where I spend most of my time. In spite of messy political upheavals and a lack of flushing toilets it is my one true home. And I am opening a little window for you, Dear Reader, to look inside.
// Oriole Burdee
(I will try to refrain from making too many parenthetical remarks)
Oriole Burdee - editor and enthusiast
Baldy Pate and Mistress Mulch - Fiddlehead Spring's most formidable competitors in the bed-and-tea business
Battle Axe - fierce underground operative and storyteller
Inkstone - you shall see
Fire Fade - rather thin sister of above-mentioned fierce underground operative
Snaggletooth – manager of the largest pawnshop in Pearl City’s Cloth District
Glossy Petal – remarkable masseuse from the countryside
Broken Talon – legendary outlaw, usually hungry
Coriander – self-styled problem solver
Long Spring – Broken Talon’s tired Number Two
Captain Kneecap - veteran of the Northern Invasions with an extraordinarily useful leg
The Cat – shady character of uncommitted loyalties
Moonface – virtual orphan, a little dim
His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of the Great Purple Dynasty, Son of Heaven, Lord of Ten Thousand Years – self explanatory
Secretary Spangle – the Emperor’s right-hand man, very fond of fried dishes
Municipal Vice-Minister of Excavations - unfortunate wretch
Municipal Minister of Sanitation – boss of Pearl City's sewer maintenance and controller of bad smells
Rats - smarter than you think
Sesame Seed – an excellent baker, a bit of a mercenary
Twisted Tree - very old sage with numb legs
Little Lizard - under-under keeper of imperial cellars
Head Steward – in charge of palace “stuff” like tea supplies and drapery
Although you may read these episodes beginning-to-end, end-to-beginning, side-ways, upside-down or perpendicular, I suggest you start with the first one Flushing the Rats Out of The Underground City. And thank-you, Dear Reader, for joining me (Oriole Burdee) here!!
